Waterford and European Football: A Gino Pozzo Success Story

When Gino Pozzo took over the Watford Football Club in 2012, he knew there was a rough path ahead. The organization was deep in debt and languished for years in the lower tiers of competitive play. But there was never really any doubt he could make it work. After all, Gino had already done it once before.

Legacy of Sports Excellence

The Pozzo family empire started as a woodworking business in their native Italy. On his mother’s side, Gino is related to many Udinese Football Club presidents. Gino’s father, Gianpaolo, took the profits and bought the Udinese Club. Three seasons later, Udinese was competing in the top leagues.

After graduating with a Masters from Harvard, Gino Pozzo moved to Spain where he lived with his Catalan bride for the next two decades. There he managed Pozzo family interests including the Granada Football Club purchased under his direction. As with the Udinese Club, Granada’s fortunes turned around very quickly. After a thirty-five year drought of wins, they ascended to the Primera Liga.

British Invasion

Gino Pozzo has a passion for football, and he knows the English do as well. So it was only natural for him to jump on the opportunity to join the English football scene. And he took this commitment very seriously. Gino sold the majority of his shares in Granada to better focus on Waterford. He moved himself and his family to London for a better vantage point to oversee operations.

Gino is a firm believer in the big picture when it comes to football. He isn’t afraid to change up coaching staff or trade players between Pozzo teams if it means a better organization in the long run. No matter how you feel about his tactics, its difficult to argue with the results. See this page for related information.
