Boomers Starting to Switch From Finding Jobs: There is a New Silver Lining for Older Workers Blooming…

It is phenomenal the number of boomer starting to switch from finding jobs: There is a new sil ver lining for older worker blooming in the fantastic world of ours…

Out of Work Baby Boomers Show a Refusal to Give Up

For those of you who are not aware of it the job crisis has hit baby boomers hard: more than 5 million people over 45 are out of work, which is more than doubling in the past year. It takes this age group longer to find a new job than those of younger ages.  For this age group its more than six months for 44 percent of them, and that is sad.

No doubt the job market is challenging for everyone right now, but what is most impressive is among this age group within our community is that undying attitude or refusal to give up, and speaking as one I agree we will not give up. It is that attitude that build this great country and it’s not about to leave our minds.  Statistics show discouraged workers throwing in the towel on their search in every age group except this one. There’s no official explanation, but we as boomer know exactly the reason and it’s because we boomers can’t, won’t and don’t give up. There’s a mortgage and college tuition to pay. There’s that dwindling retirement savings. Some younger people may opt to go back to school fulltime and crash on mom’s couch. But for boomers, instead of saying, “Nobody’s hiring” or “I can’t find work”, they say, “I must find work and I will even if I need to start my own business”, which many boomers are jumping onto the band wagon.”   We’ve talked to many people 50 and over who’ve done just that, and we’ve compiled some of the lessons they shared.

Explore options based on your current (and often evolving) interests.

Don’t assume you have to do what you’ve always done. Unemployment offers you the chance to move in a new direction. Take stock of your lifestyle and interests, which have likely shifted over the years even though your job during that time had always remained the same. Have your personal passions changed? Can you spot a career opportunity that’s connected to your future dreams instead of to your previous responsibilities?  You know you can we just need to do it…

Check with the Career One Step in your area.

Even though there’s often lots of red tape connected to government assistance, you should make a visit to the state-run unemployment office in your area to inquire about the assistance you may be eligible for. You paid for this while you were working so we understand it may be hard for you to take the money but you paid it in just for this reason.  Stand up and learn to receive what you have earned, plus it will help out with things as you build your business...

Research resources specifically for workers 45 and over…

AARP has online content and resources specifically for older workers. Experience Corps engages people over 55 in serving their communities. The Serve America Act offers incentives for those 55 and over to volunteer. Many local community groups—churches, the YMCA and other non-profits—offer programs to mature workers, so network in your area to discover what may be available. You may be pleasantly surprised…

One thing about this age group, they never ever give up, they will find a way.

Please let us know your thoughts on this generation and options you have come up with.

Back in Time…. for the Holidays

I went back in time for the Holidays and learned,

Life is what you make of it.

Let me explain what I mean.

My father took me on a trip this past holiday. He had told me stories about his childhood all my life, however this past Holiday season, I made it home for the holidays (which it had been over 27years).

I have visited different times of the years but never on the Holiday.

So off we went as he brought his stories to life with real scenes of his past, such as

Dad's Childhood home in the 1940"s, outside of Prairie Grove, Ark

He was born in TX but as a small child they moved to Prairie Grove Ark, right outside on a farm

As we drove he would point out spots like down at the river about a mile away from his home where he spent many days fishing, building a fire and playing in caves.  The huge rock he would sit on by the river was still there and you could see signs of the old bridge he used to cross. Up the road was the home that he remembers his family living, with a dairy barn, that they would milk the cows by hand and later upgraded to a grade A milking with the machines.

Anyway, it was very awe inspiring to me how wonderful his memories were, even though at times he knows they didn’t have much. For several years he being around 8, his mother and him were on the farm by themselves and he would go and fish or hunt rabbits or squirrels for their meat.  He was the youngest

Great Grandfathers home in Decatur

and the 3 older children and their father were away. My grandfather would send 10$ per month for their staples.  Finally my grandmother wanted to move up the KC to be with the rest of the family so she asked my dad if he thought he could get an old car running. So he set off working on the car (at 8 or 9 years old) finally he did and he drove them to Decator where one of his grandfathers lived while working for the railroad.  When they made it there he put them on a train and they headed to KC, MO.  My dad had never been in a big city and they arrived late at night, so when he woke up in the morning and he looked out the window, he saw huge buildings all around.  They lived downtown KC for a while.  Life was tough however he only talks about all the wonderful memories he has.

My point is, Life is definitely what you make of it, if he was of the type, he could be very bitter that as a child he was responsible for providing meat and taking care of the farm as many people are.  My father is in his mid 70’s now and he is still enjoying life and everything he has done and seen. I have met other elderly people that only have misery memories of how life was so difficult.  You choose to have the life of your choice.  If you choose wisely, your life will be

Engine from old train dad rode to KC in

much more joyous and it will open you to a whole new way of life.  My father for the most part has always worked for himself, a Master Plumber, builder, and willing to do what ever it took…is still active, lives in a home that is over half a million and has enough set aside to do whatever he chooses to do.  Proving that attitude and believing you can do anything you put your mind to, you can accomplish. A very Cherished memory to be able to share this history trip with my father, December 2010.

Are you ready willing and able to choose to go for your riches, see the best in your surroundings and be what you were meant to be?  It is no one’s choice but yours.

Need a little help in getting your mind/attitude where it needs to be to see your full potential?  Come and join us at Million Mind March every Monday for free.
