Paul and I try and do just this when thinking about how to expand our business.
In this day and age you need to be different, if you want to be heard or seen.
Another way of putting it is when everyone is Zigging you Zag, I know that sounds odd,
let me try and explain.
For instance, you have a message that you want to get out to 10,000 people, how are
you going to do that and be heard above everyone else that is trying to be heard also?
Let’s just take one example:
OK how do you go about spreading your message. I will give you two ways of thinking out of the box
rather than on the internet where thousands are doing the same thing, how about while your are out within your neighborhood or city you use Post it Notes to spread your word. Everywhere you go, to the ATM machine, the gas station, the grocery store, you stick your post it, at eye level with an ad on it. This is a simple ad, just a few lines printed on your post it note can help you jump start your message. The ad wording is simple to the point. Let say it looks something like this:

This is a tested ad that works. Let me explain a bit, you don’t say what it is, (don’t have room) your purpose is to just raise some interest. You use an 800 # (you can get these really cheap these days), it is a 24 hr recorded message- lets be honest, people will be more willing to call the number, if they know it is recorded just to listen. So in essence, this will filter many people out if they truly aren’t interested, but for those that are, once they listen to the recorded message – and you need to have something compelling on the message to keep their interest, you allow on the call to leave you their name, number, email (what ever information you would like). Cheap right. You may think that sounds cheesy, however, think of how many people that may be looking for something more, that doesn’t have alot of money to invest to begin with. They see how this worked for them and they think, I could do this. Make it easy, simple and you are off and running.
Ok now you may be thinking, I don’t want to print or write out this on each post it. Go to staples/home depot and have them put your ad on a rubber self inking stamp. It’s cost around$25 dollars. Post it’s you can find these on sell, even at Wal-mart.
For another way, use the same ad/stamp and put it on 4 X 6 index cards. And use the index cards for post cards. $.28 to mail post cards and the Post office will accept index cards as postcards. You can either go through your phone book and get addresses or buy a list of addresses and budget accordingly. When people get these in their mail box’s they may think it is funny, there again, someone will be thinking I could do this. You can even dress up your index card with maybe a sticker of something that for instance reminds you of your childhood and makes you smile – this will work with a list around your age group. Be creative.
These may sound like silly things to do, always keep in mind, your prospects may be thinking they can’t afford to start a business and seeing something like this may be all it takes to give them the idea that they too can do it. It’s duplicate’s, doesn’t matter what their business is you don’t have a business mentioned on your post it, just an opportunity.
There are so many other things you can do – thinking out of the box. You don’t have to get it right you just have to get it going.
